Is Scarlett Johansson Still Scarred from Blake Lively And Ryan Reynolds’ Relationship Saga?

In the past, Ryan Reynolds and Scarlett Johansson experienced a fleeting marriage before eventually finding their true soulmates.

Having both emerged from serious relationships, the Marvel actors embarked on a romantic journey in 2007. Reynolds had been in a relationship with Alanis Morissette since 2002, even becoming engaged, but they amicably called off their wedding plans that same year.

Meanwhile, Johansson had ended her one-year relationship with Josh Hartnett, her co-star in “The Black Dahlia.” The connection between the Black Widow actress and Reynolds grew stronger, and within a year, they became engaged. Their wedding occurred in September 2008 at a secluded wilderness retreat on Vancouver Island, Canada.

However, two years after their private wedding, the Deadpool star and Scarlett Johansson revealed their decision to part ways.

“In light of much thoughtful consideration, we have chosen to end our marital journey,” the couple expressed in a statement published by Us Weekly in December 2010. “Our relationship began with love, and it is with that same love and respect that we conclude it. While we do not demand privacy, we do greatly appreciate it.”

Why Did Ryan Reynolds and Scarlett Johansson Divorce?

Ryan and Scarlett’s marital union proved short-lived, and their decision to part ways was formally announced in December 2010.

The spokesperson for the actor from “The Proposal” conveyed the message, stating, “Following a period of extended and careful contemplation on both sides, we have chosen to conclude our marriage.

Our initial connection was rooted in affection, and it is with that same affection and consideration that we bid farewell. While we do not demand seclusion, we greatly value it.”

Their divorce reached its conclusion in July 2011. Since their separation, both Ryan and Scarlett have refrained from discussing their prior relationship.

Nearly 13 years after their parting, the actress from “Asteroid City” infrequently mentioned her former spouse while participating in Gwyneth Paltrow’s “Goop” podcast on April 18, 2023.

After Scarlett revealed that she had been married three times, Gwyneth responded, “Oh, right, I almost forgot about your marriage to Ryan Reynolds!”

The New York City native, who was wed to Romain Dauriac from 2014 to 2017 and entered matrimony with Colin in 2020, acknowledged that her time with Ryan as a married couple was relatively brief.

“In our household, we hold a special appreciation for a quality Ryan Reynolds,” the actress of “Shakespeare In Love” shared with her guest, prompting Scarlett to affirm, “He’s genuinely a fine individual.” She had previously reflected on their marital experience during a 2019 conversation with Vanity Fair.

“When I first got married, I was a 23-year-old,” she recounted during the interview. “My comprehension of matrimony was somewhat limited. I might have idealized it to some extent, I believe.”

While Scarlett seems content in her relationship with Colin, Ryan has enjoyed a joyous marriage with Blake since 2012.

Black Lively & Ryan Reynolds

After their divorce, Reynolds found new love with Blake Lively, and the couple exchanged vows in 2017. Their family expanded with the arrival of four children: daughters James (born in 2014), Inez (born in 2016), and Betty (born in 2019), as well as a fourth child in 2023.

On the other hand, Johansson moved forward by marrying Romain Dauriac in 2014, but their union ended three years later. They share a daughter named Rose, who was born in 2014.

The Oscar nominee then found companionship with Colin Jost, and after three years of courtship, they tied the knot in 2017. In August 2021, Johansson and the Saturday Night Live star welcomed their son, Cosmo.

Nearly a decade following her separation from Reynolds, the Avengers actress candidly discussed their marriage in a 2019 profile for Vanity Fair. “My initial marriage was when I was 23 years old,” she reflected during the interview. “I didn’t truly grasp the concept of marriage. Perhaps I idealized it to some extent. It’s a distinct phase of my life now.”

Four years later, Johansson made another rare reference to her former spouse while conversing with Gwyneth Paltrow, who had momentarily forgotten about their past marriage.

The Lost in Translation star mentioned that she and the Red Notice actor “didn’t have a lengthy marriage” and described him as “a wonderful person.”

Scarlett Johansson Used Her Divorce for a Role

Johansson may have alluded to another factor contributing to the separation when she remarked, “Navigating a relationship with another actor presents its challenges. There needs to be a profound understanding of how to divide time, especially when both individuals’ careers progress concurrently.

Even if one person’s success surpasses the other’s, that dynamic can create complexities. A sense of competition might emerge.” The former couple has evolved and matured since their parting, evident in their subsequent marriages to fellow actors.

Johansson drew upon her encounter with divorce and her parents’ experiences to enrich her portrayal in the 2019 film “Marriage Story.”

In her conversation with Vanity Fair, she shared, “I found a certain connection to the character and anyone navigating a divorce. I grasped the ambivalent emotions associated with it on a profound level. I could comprehend the character’s intricate sentiments because I had personally traversed similar territory.”
